Keowee-Toxaway State Park

Keowee-Toxaway State Park Professional Review and Guide

"This half day loop offers fairly steep ascents and descents, impressive rock outcrops, and good views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the northern portion of Lake Keowee. The Raven Rock Trail ascends over and around boulders, eventually emerging on a rocky ridge with a clear understory.

The trail follows a series of ups and downs around McKinney Mountain. A rocky area near the top allows you an excellent view west to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Farther along, another vista overlooks Lake Keowee."

"A flawlessly flat slab of stone forms the natural bridge for which this trail was named. But that’s not the only unique natural feature to be found along this challenging loop. A portion of the hike follows the crystal-clear Poe Creek.

As the water tap dances over the rocks, it forms lively cascades and even a small waterfall. An open area at the base of the falls is perfect for the pups to play in the water, and you come to realize that Lake Keowee is not the only amazing waterway within this park."

"Keowee-Toxaway State Park is considered the gateway to the 43,000-acre Jocassee Gorges, named by National Geographic as one of “50 of the World’s Last Great Places.” Jocassee Gorges is known for its amazing waterfalls and diverse plant life (including more than 60 species of rare or endangered plants).

The trail offers amazing views of and access to Lake Keowee, and traverses land that the Cherokee once inhabited. Views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are stunning, and in springtime, wildflowers line the trail."
