Many people with dogs flock to the Town of Hilton Head Island for a vacation, and most have likely searched for recreational activities for their pets during the visit. Unfortunately, animals are not permitted on the beach during peak hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the trails at the nearby Pickney Wildlife Refuge are off-limits to dogs year-round. The Town of Hilton Head Island came to the rescue, however, with the creation of Jarvis Creek Park, dedicated on May 5, 2003. The $1 million Jarvis Creek Park is part of a rainwater management system for the island that pumps runoff into the freshwater pond for sediment to settle. It is then filtered through the wetlands before being released into Jarvis Creek.
