A pleasant half-day walk that passes through pine forest and red-cockaded woodpecker habitat, climaxing with bald cypresses at the head of the park's lake. Longleaf pine, blackjack oak, turkey oak, and hickory dominate the wooded areas of Cheraw State Park. ] Here in the Sandhills, visitors frequently encounter speedy lizards, particularly the aptly named six-lined racerunner. You may or may not meet the red-cockaded woodpecker, but you will certainly hear the raucous call of its pileated cousin. On the lake expect to see Canada goose, wood duck, coot, great egret, and pied-billed grebe. In the wintertime, a wide variety of ducks visit.

We've camped here 5 times over the last few years, it's the nicest place in the south. It's perfect for our Darlington Race trip. It's great to leave trailer and run back to town for groceries and dinner in Cheraw.
