Lower Saluda River

Lower Saluda River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Murray Dam. Your easterly direction takes you ever closer to downtown Columbia, but first you will paddle through some attractive scenery. Several large feeder streams add their flow to the river by the time you reach the Gardendale access. The river then takes on a more urban aspect as it passes under two interstate bridges. The Saluda River changes character while dropping through several rapids and cutting its way through the fall line.

At normal water levels, these are straightforward Class I–II rapids—except for Class III Mill Race Rapids. This shoal has a steep, elongated drop and is irregular because a former dam collapsed here; the dam’s sharp-cut blocks tumbled into the shoal and add a level of danger unseen in natural rapids. A portage trail on river left will take you around Mill Race Rapids."
