Sewee Shell Mound Trail

Awendaw, South Carolina

Sewee Shell Mound Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Sewee Shell Mound hike is a 1-mile, self-guided loop trail tucked along the coast of South Carolina. The interpretive trail is unique in that it consists of a clamshell mound and an oyster ring mound that date back 4000 years to when Native Americans inhabited the area and used what is now the Intracoastal Waterway to catch and harvest their seafood.

The mounds are the remnants of a once flourishing community that built its homes along heaps of discarded oyster and clamshells. Archaeologists speculate that the mounds may have been used for ceremonial purposes, and modern-day adventurers can see these ancient formations along the tidal creeks near the Intracoastal Waterway."
