Aiken is proud of its southern heritage and its investment in thoroughbred horses. At the Aiken Mile Track Training Center along the Montmorenci Loop, trotter horses work out. Aiken has been considered a health resort since the late 1800's, thanks to its mild climate. You will enjoy cycling through the rolling hills and scenic horse farms in the area. Be sure to allow time for an enjoyable thirty-minute stroll in the Hopewell Gardens on the Vaucluse/Graniteville loop after the ride to enjoy the shade of the live oak, magnolia, and Japanese maple trees. Well-marked trails catalog and provide botanical information on the flowers, plants, and trees in the gardens.

This is a great trail. We did in November and they were just harvesting the cotton crop so we got to see the cotton growing on the bushes which is quite a sight for a northerner. Traffic was not bad and the cars seemed quite respecful of the bikes. The only downer were the loose barking dogs running after us, it happened about 6 or 7 different times in the ride. That was unsettling so it is best to be prepared for that.
