"The Middle Fork of the Rogue River here flows down an immense glacial valley, the largest and deepest in Oregon, marked by steep, even sides and a flat bottom. Since the river has cut a small canyon into the larger valley, the trail’s designers chose to locate the path away from the river, on the more level bench. Hence the scarcity of river approaches on the first portion of the hike. Between the trailhead and Halifax Junction, there’s not a hill, side creek, or clearing, and only three brief glimpses of the river. After 2.0 miles of this, the spot where the trail swings south is a major highlight." Read more

The trail began beautifully, green and level. But, within a mile, the trail turned dusty and black and grey from a fire in '08. It was interesting to see the new green life poke its head out of the ashes, as many plants, like the oregon grape, claimed their spot in the dusty soil. The greenery came and went as we hiked toward Halifax Creek, which was on the Eastern border of the burn. We camped there for one night as it was the only trail down to the river. It was a nice spot and the talking waters allowed us to sleep peacefully. On day two, we made our way back down the trail this time heading South around the bend. the ascend to Alta Lake Trail was a bit challenging. Almost a 3000ft elevation gain, but the view from the top was worth every step. I will definitely do it again in a few years after the green returns to the burn zone.
