Travel through the basin of the Sakonnet River to a large, protected cove. The cove located just to the west of the Sakonnet River basin is known by many names. You might hear it called Blue Bell Cove, Blue Bill Cove, or Old Orchard Cove. To avoid confusion, many simply refer to it as “The Cove”—and around Tiverton and Portsmouth, on the banks of the Sakonnet, there’s no mistaking which cove. A large and almost completely protected saltwater cove just south of the Sakonnet River Bridge (which marks the transition from the Mount Hope Bay into the Sakonnet), The Cove contains several islands and pretty beaches perfect for exploration. As with many sea kayak trips in Rhode Island, you won’t feel isolated from civilization in The Cove, but there are many quiet and uninhabited inlets where seabirds feed undisturbed.
