Block Island, North Island Hiking Professional Review and Guide
"The north end of Block Island rolls out trails of history and discovery, tracing beach, bluff, and inland habitat. With fair weather and tide, virtually the entire island beach perimeter is open to walking. North Light is the signature landmark of the northern shore. The Bluff Trail provides an elevated vantage on the sculpted shore of Block Island North, while the beach below puts you up close with the eroded cliffs, rock and sand shore, and the gulls that gather there. This particular hike visits all three, with an island taxi ride and low tide making it possible.
This hike requires a brisk pace to complete before the last ferry. Diversions are many, and not all of the beach is easy to walk. If you expect that either time or will may run short, focus on a piece of the hike instead. The Clay Head Trail launches you into upland habitat as you skirt the big inland water of Clayhead Swamp. Birders seek songbird in the scrub and waterfowl on the ponds."
