Trail Information

Jamestown
Nearby City
7-10 nautical miles
Distance
3.46-foot mean tidal range at Newport. The shallows off of Beavertail Point can develop tall, dumping seas that collide with reflecting waves and create especially chaotic conditions. Newton Rock can quickly multiply the size of incoming swell and dump it quite suddenly, which would be unfortunate for any small boat in its way.
Tidal Information
The southern end of Jamestown is subject to whatever conditions the open ocean may present, as well as the effects of tidal current splitting around the island as it moves in and out of Narragansett Bay. Both channels that flank Jamestown accommodate large, swiftly moving ships on their way to and from Narragansett Bay’s industrial ports. Ferries, tour boats, and one of the busiest yachting harbors in New England all make the rock-strewn near-shore waters look relatively safe.
