A pretty paddle through small historic mill villages, undeveloped forest, and open marsh. The pretty Pawcatuck River flows from Worden Pond, in the Great Swamp Management Area, all the way to Little Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and offers many opportunities for great paddling trips. The last 9 miles of the river serve as a natural boundary between Connecticut and Rhode Island. The quality of water in the Pawcatuck has improved dramatically over the past few decades, and today the river supports a diverse population of plants and animals. If the water tends to be brown in color in certain sections, this is due to breakdown of organic material such as leaves and wood—not water pollution.
