Sitting just 12 miles off the Rhode Island coast, Block Island has been popular as a summer retreat for 120 years. The island is accessible year-round by ferry, and for kids this is sure to be one of the trip’s most memorable events. The ferry ride from Point Judith takes about an hour. Currently, cars cost more than $70 round trip and there is a charge of $15.65 (same-day round trip) for each person twelve or older and $7.60 for each kid, ages five through eleven. (You can rent mopeds and bicycles on the island if you prefer to leave your car on the mainland—in the summer a great idea!) You should make a reservation by calling (866) 783-7340 or online at www.blockislandferry.com (months in advance if you plan to take your car across during the summer). Because camping on the island is forbidden, you may want to arrive early in the day and leave on the evening ferry or stay overnight in one of the hotels or guesthouses. Rodmans Hollow, one of several popular hiking areas, is a 128-acre wildlife refuge with several different trails that offer visitors a good look at the variety of plant and animal life on the island.
