Hearts Content National Scenic Area Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"One benefit of old-growth forests? Easy walking. You’ll notice that while cruising through Hearts Content National Scenic Area. Trees reaching 140 feet or higher into the sky do a great job of keeping much sunlight from reaching the forest floor. That limits the amount of underbrush. When you add in lots of white-tailed deer—forestry officials believe there have been too many here for too long—they can keep what does grow from getting rolling.
The result is a national forest section that seems manicured, almost vacuumed even, and certainly park-like. That’s welcome here, though. The larger Allegheny National Forest is big, by Eastern standards, at more than 500,000 acres. But it’s fragmented, broken into several pieces, with each of those pieces home to varying amounts of oil and gas development. That makes undisturbed tracts like this all the more special."
