Sunset Rocks

Sunset Rocks Professional Review and Guide

"Walk a section of the Appalachian Trail to the ruins of a top-secret World War II POW camp. Climb Little Rocky Ridge for an exciting, hand-over-hand scramble through a narrow boulder outcrop for a mountaintop view.

From the Revolutionary War period to the beginning of the twentieth century, the iron industry flourished in the mountains of Pennsylvania. The iron ore was extracted from the earth and the surrounding trees were harvested to produce charcoal to fire the furnaces."

"This popular hike follows the Appalachian Trail (AT) from Pine Grove Furnace State Park for several miles to the Toms Run Shelters. Just beyond the shelters, it picks up the Sunset Rocks Trail and follows that over Sunset Rocks and Little Rocky Ridge back to the AT, about 1.5 miles from the parking area.

Begin this hike at the Furnace Stack parking area across from the general store at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Following the AT past the front of the store and along Bendersville Road out to PA 233 following the white AT blazes."
