The Tamarack area is rugged and beautiful. The Tamarack Swamp Natural Area as well as some of the state’s largest, shallow natural gas fields are located here, in the northern corner of the Sproul State Forest. A large compressor station that pumps gas through interstate pipelines from massive underground wells is also located here. Gas is stored in underground reservoirs, which is one of the safest and most effective ways to store this nonrenewable resource. These subterranean caverns hold an excess supply of gas that is used throughout the winter months not only by Pennsylvanians but many others in neighboring states. The pipelines are great for mountain biking but at times can be downright confusing. A sense of adventure and good navigational skills are needed. Highlights: Tamarack Fire Tower, views, bermed ATV trails, sweet hidden singletrack, stream crossings. Tread: most of the ride follows rocky ATV trail and heavily wooded singletrack. There are a few sections of gated forest and pipeline roads that link the ride together.
