Youghiogheny River Trail to Jonathan Run Falls

Youghiogheny River Trail to Jonathan Run Falls Professional Review and Guide

"For an easy, Sunday-stroll-type hike, this one can’t be beat. It starts at the refurbished train depot and traces an abandoned railroad grade. The path is, quite literally, flat the whole way. There are excellent river views en route, and at the end there’s a deep forest waterfall.

After you’ve spent a day or two watching bicyclists weave their way across the 600 foot-long rails-to-trails bridge, you’ll want to get up there yourself. And it’ll be worth it when you do. Two old railroad bridges span the river, each more than 100 feet above the water. From the first bridge you can watch swimmers wading in the wide, shallow waters to the east. But look the other way and the river narrows dramatically into the famous Ohiopyle Falls. It’s here, to the west, that the river snakes around the Ferncliff Peninsula, so that when you are on the second bridge, you’re just above the rafter put-in area on the peninsula."
