McConnells Mill State Park

McConnells Mill State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"After a steep descent into a 400-foot gorge, the trail continues downstream alongside a gushing stream, where giant sandstone boulders have created whitewater rapids. The trail passes through boulders on the slopes—where runoff waters create miniature waterfalls.

It then passes a restored mill and a covered bridge. At the turnaround point it crosses the creek on a traffic bridge. On this side of the creek, it is a typical forest footpath, running about 100 feet above the stream."

"If you want to shorten the hike, park near McConnells Mill either at the mill, which is very limited, or in the parking area above it on McConnells Mill Road. From the mill, visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy both the Kildoo and Alpha Pass trails. The first 200 yards of the Kildoo Trail is paved and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Tours of the mill are conducted (see Nearby Attractions following the Description) and worth spending the time. The covered bridge is charming, and there is an overlook of the dam. McConnells Mill State Park encompasses 2,546 acres of the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. The geology of this area formed the gorge, providing the path for the 49-mile-long Slippery Rock Creek and the environment for the formation of the many waterfalls and rock outcroppings." Read more

"Slippery Rock Creek can be wild where it cuts through the gorge here at McConnells Mill State Park. In spring, when snowmelt causes the stream to run high and fast, and at other times of high water, it’s a favorite of kayakers trained to run whitewater. That explains the life preserver rings you’ll encounter at various points along this hike. Don’t think the boaters are the only ones who get to experience adventure, though. The hiking here can be thrilling, but also rather challenging, too. You’ll notice it right away. Leave the parking lot and descend some fairly steep, often wet and slippery stairs to Alpha Pass Trail. From there the trail is rocky, rooty, and winding. And that’s the easy part." Read more
