South Mountain Range Forest Tour: Loop South through Michaux State Forest Professional Review and Guide
"This quiet, 56-mile loop explores the flank and ridge of South Mountain, overlapping, in part, with the 19-mile Michaux State Forest Self-guided Automobile Trail. As the automobile trail has an interpretive brochure paired to numbered posts along the final leg of the drive, you may wish to pick up a brochure prior to heading out on your excursion or while en route at the district office. This drive travels a remote mountain region in the heart of where the Confederate Army made its northernmost push during the Civil War.
Special attractions: Pine Grove Furnace, Caledonia, and Mont Alto state parks; the Totem Pole Playhouse summer theater at Caledonia State Park; vistas; wildlife; laurel, rhododendron, and fall foliage; hiking, fishing, swimming, picnicking, quiet boating, and winter sports. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
