Lower Beam Loop Professional Review and Guide
"The Laurel Summit day use area is a great place to start numerous hikes and rides that spiderweb out from this ridge-top location. There are restrooms, spring water, and charcoal pits for stoking up some coals for that after-the-ride T-bone! Expect to see a few cars parked here, as it is an outdoor hot-spot. Things change once you’re out on the trail, where there are many opportunities for peace and solitude.
Highlights: Great woodland ride for the experienced novice on up to the honed hammerhead, the historic PW&S railroad grade, great wildlife, viewing opportunities. Tread: a fine blend of singletrack, doubletrack, old woods road, and fire roads. The trails are mainly hardpacked dirt, but there is a rocky, loose descent on the Beam Run Road trail. Also, the forest service has laid in some huge ballast rock along a section of the Pittsburgh, Westmorland, and Somersten (PW&S) rail grade that may present an annoying challenge."
