Raymond B. Winter State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Be sure to explore the Rapid Run Natural Area. One of the first places in the state set aside to be maintained in an undisturbed condition, it’s 39 acres are home to white pines and hemlocks indicative of Pennsylvania’s forests of the 1850s. Here you’ll also find vernal ponds—temporary pools of water in the woods that dry up in summer.

A couple other unusual geologic features worth exploring are the Little Bubbler and Park Overlook. The former is a small boiling spring visible at the west end of the swimming beach. It’s an artesian spring that causes sand to bubble and churn in the rising water. The overlook offers views of Halfway Dam, the Rapid Run water gap, and several nearby mountains. Reach it by hiking Overlook Trail or driving McCalls Dam Road."
