Baker Trail: Crooked Creek Lake Area Professional Review and Guide
"This hike is part of the 141-mile Baker Trail, which begins in Freeport and ends in Allegheny National Forest, and is continually threatened by encroaching development. Very short portions of this segment have been rerouted to road, which turned out to be pleasant, as locals were welcoming. The Baker Trail began as an idea conceived in 1948 by Tony Pronses, the first chairman of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Youth Hostels. The Board of the Pittsburgh Council authorized construction of the extended trail to connect Pittsburgh and Cook Forest via forest paths, old jeep roads, and some dirt roads through woods and farmlands. The trail was named the Horace Forbes Baker Trail to honor the prominent Pittsburgh attorney who had been instrumental in establishing the Pittsburgh Council in 1948."
