Promised Land State Park

Promised Land State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"It’s hard to appreciate the sarcasm today. In the late eighteenth century, devotees of the Shaker religion moved into the area of what is now Promised Land State Park with the goal of building a village centered around farming.

That proved difficult in the extreme, given the rocky nature of the terrain. Later, they switched to lumbering and built sawmills to process the abundant timber. Plenty of cutting went on—by the dawn of the twentieth century, few trees remained—but that venture wasn’t entirely successful either."
