Fort Necessity National Battlefield Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Most historic sites offer the chance to “step back in time,” as it were. At Fort Necessity, you can step back in time on roads that actually date to the ancient past. Gen. Edward Braddock and George Washington led British forces in building what was then known as the Braddock Road. It was designed to be a path of destruction, in one sense.

The idea was to hack a substantial enough way through the forested mountains to allow for the passage of artillery and baggage wagons headed to forts in and around Pittsburgh. Walking this loop around the National Battlefield puts you on what remains of that road, at least for a little bit."
