Ricketts Glen State Park

Ricketts Glen State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"You don’t find many waterfalls on the prairies. Not big, spectacular ones anyway. It’s a matter of topography. Water causes erosion wherever it flows, carrying small stones and gritty sand along and scouring out a course through soft earth. Only the hardest rock withstands the pressure. Solid ledges are the result.

Waterfalls occur when the water pouring over those iron-like spots has to fall a ways before plunging into a pool. That takes elevation, or rather, changes in elevation. Ricketts Glen State Park has that."
