Tucked between the Cehmung and Susquehanna rivers, just south of the New York border, is one of the few large expanses of flat land in northeastern Pennsylvania. This short ride will take you through the pleasant small towns of Athens and Sayre that occupy much of that land. At this point the Susquehanna is still a young and growing river, and it's quite narrow, at least in comparison to the width of a mile that it reaches in southern Pennsylvania. The rest of this ride is a leisurely trek through business and residential areas. You'll pass parks and open spaces that invite you to stop, relax, and look at the mountains that ride up in all directions. In autumn, you can admire the fire on the surrounding mountains as the leaves turn to brilliant shades of red and gold. The road surface is good.

A trip NOT for the faint of heart. The trail was through the business districts of Athens-Sayre. Although flat, the non-scenery was replaced by the multiple cars and trucks that travel the same road with you, traveling at highway speeds. Not at all what I expected!
