"If you started at the mouth of the Willamette River near Portland and traveled upstream, sticking with the larger branch every time a tributary entered the flow, your 309-mile-long journey would end at Timpanogas Lake, the source of Oregon’s largest river. For that reason alone it is worth visiting, but if you require more encouragement, consider that this mountain lake also serves as the jumping-off point for several excellent and relatively easy hikes. The best destination is Indigo Lake, a stunning pool at the base of Sawtooth Mountain that makes a great first backpacking trip for youngsters or an easy day hike for the older set. Before starting your hike, walk to the road bridge over the outlet from Timpanogas Lake and stop for a moment to contemplate that this small creek grows to become the mighty Willamette." Read more
