Frog Lake Buttes

Frog Lake Buttes Professional Review and Guide

"Frog Lake Buttes are not a primary destination but a good alternative when you’re looking for protection in the trees and want to avoid the crowds and foul weather at Timberline and White River."

"This route does a good job of clearing your head without requiring much of your legs, your preparation, or your ambition. It’s perfect for snowshoers with small children who need to get out and who want to expose their kids to the outdoors without getting into a huge ordeal. Or you might just be traveling from Bend to Portland and need a brief opportunity to stretch your legs.

Frog Lake is a popular sno-park for snowmobilers too, so don’t bother with this area on a weekend. Come in the midweek, when you’re more likely to have the peace you’re after. Heavy snowmobile use does improve the route for snowshoeing in one way: they do tend to pack the road down quite well. That makes for easy travel with young ones. Still, walk to the side of the road in case motorized speedsters buzz past you."

New Year's Eve was a busy day on the Frog Lake trail. We had to contend with kids sledding, who could not steer out of the way (and with snowshoes, we couldn't get out of the way very fast). Although the trail is fairly short, by far our best experiences were when straying from the (heavily) beaten path. There was plenty of virgin now to be explored. Just make sure you don't stray onto private land that borders part of the trail. The lake surface itself can also be a nice area to explore, so long as the ice is frozen solid. After going out onto the ice, we saw patches of slush near the shore--perhaps not the wisest move. Because the area is so heavily trafficked, wildlife sitings were rare, mostly jays and a few other birds too far away to see. Consider bringing binoculars if you're into bird watching.
