In Northwest Oregon, 11 miles southwest of Wamic near the eastern boundary of the Mt. Hood National Forest. Tread: Dirt road, short segments of singletrack and paved road. Hazards: Watch for other trail users, including motorized vehicles. Short segments are steep and rocky. The trail is slippery when wet. The first pioneers floated down the Columbia River from The Dalles through a treacherous series of rapids near Cascade Locks. The Columbia was a wild river; many pioneers lost all of their possessions and some lost their lives. The locks to bypass the rapids were not completed until 1896.
