Cliff Lake

Cliff Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Even without knowing the geology, this is a beautiful area of lakes, dense forests, vertical ridges, and jagged summits. To fully appreciate this short, easy hike from the most popular trailhead in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness, one must be aware of a geological event occurring 6,000 years ago.

Imagine a 5,500-foot mountain, formed by ancient lava flows, suddenly breaking in half and sending millions of tons of rubble into the valley, 2,500 feet below. Such an event created the escarpment above Cliff Lake and impounded the waters of Buckeye, Cliff, and Fish Lakes. Highlights: An easy hike off the South Umpqua River to a beautiful pair of lakes, then to the top of a mountain; interesting geology."
