Neahkahnie Mountain rises abruptly from the pounding Pacific surf. In fact, a section of U.S. Highway 101 was blasted from its cliffs about 400 feet above the ocean. The steep trail to the summit starts just north of the blasted-out section, at 410 feet elevation, and winds its way through openings and dense forest to a viewpoint very close to the 1,681-foot-high summit of Neahkahnie Mountain. The Neahkahnie Mountain Trail is within Oswald West State Park and is part of the Oregon Coast Trail.
