Climb the steep route to the summit of Elk Mountain. Then descend slightly over a very rough trail to join the abandoned road system that you will follow back, first along slopes, then close to rushing streams, to the trailhead. This loop can be hiked in either direction, but it is best to do it clockwise and get the steep parts done early in the hike.
