North Matthieu Lake Trail Professional Reviews and Guides
"The Matthieu Lakes Loop somehow ?ies under the radar of many hikers and runners. Encompassing all of the elements of what makes Central Oregon special, this balloon loop provides spectacular views of the Cascades, sweeping views of ancient lava ?elds, and pristine alpine lakes nestled among old-growth ponderosa pines. And if you time it just right, you might run into a smattering of northbound Paci?c Crest Trail (PCT) hikers who are willing to share their trail stories from all the rugged miles leading to Oregon."

"A day hike to a historic mountain pass in the Three Sisters Wilderness. Scott Pass was named for Felix and Marion Scott, pioneers who, with 50 men, laid out a wagon road over this pass in 1862. From Scott Lake to the west, the route climbed the steep, jagged lava flows, turned north to reach the crest at South Matthieu Lake, then descended to Trout Creek on the east. Several wagon companies were formed to exploit the new route, but the discovery of the lower route now followed by the McKenzie Pass Highway put an end to interest in Scott Pass. Permit required for day and overnight hikes; self issue at trailhead."

"The Matthieu Lakes loop is one of the most popular routes at McKenzie Pass, and for good reason. Two stunning lakes with completely different scenery sit just a few miles from the trailhead, making for an easy day hike with a great payoff. The soft trail is perfect for dogs, as are the multiple splashing opportunities."

"This is a scenic mountain lake hike where you will walk through a shady hemlock forest to North and South Matthieu Lakes. These high lakes are great for swimming in July and August and have established campsites if you decide you want to turn this popular day hike into an overnight trip. In addition to enjoying the views of these high lakes, you will have a panoramic view of all of the Central Cascade peaks on the return portion of this loop hike.
This is a great hike to bring your dogs and to enjoy a cool swim on a hot summer day! The hike starts on the Lava Camp Lake Trail and then intersects with the Pacific Crest Trail after 0.2 mile. If you are hiking in June or July you may still see snow melt ponds along this section of the trail."
