Little Deschutes River

Little Deschutes River Professional Review and Guide

"The Little Deschutes is a gentle, heavily meandered river that joins the main Deschutes River near Sunriver, south of Bend. Nearly 100 miles long, it begins far to the south in Klamath County.

The section described here begins and ends at points only 4.5 miles apart as the crow flies, but the river is 8.25 miles long between those points due to the countless meanders and oxbows. Even if you carry a compass, you will have a hard time determining where you are on the river."

How sweet to see both ospreys and kingfishers on this paddling trip! I made the trip in about three hours--the current is gentle enough and even the upstream is not too difficult. All in all, the water was nice and clean and clear with a good current for most of the trip. The lovely vegetation along the Deschutes River from Sunriver to Bend is a combination of old growth ponderosa pine and aspen, and the shorelines vary from marshy meadows to basalt bedrock. The sights all around are very pretty. Much of the water is moving steady and fast and with multiple falls. I noticed that there are still many good fishing spots from the bank and kayaking places along this stretch.
