Central Oregon, where cattle roam and coyotes howl, is a place of wide-open, high sagebrush desert. The singletrack Gray Butte Trail parallels the base of 5,108-foot Gray Butte located in the Crooked River National Grassland. After riding along the singletrack for about 5 miles, you’ll careen down a steep jeep track into Sherwood Canyon. And then—you guessed it—there’s a grueling 1,000-foot climb back to your starting point. Trail surface: Singletrack trail and doubletrack roads.
