John Dellenback Trail Professional Review and Guide
"The most adventurous and challenging of all the marked routes in Oregon Dunes NRA is John Dellenback Trail across Umpqua Dunes to the beach. It begins on a reasonable enough interpretive loop trail, with a spur to campsites at Eel Creek Campground. Then the trail ends and the real adventure begins: crossing the widest swath of open dunes on the Oregon coast, with help from a few widely scattered wooden posts. Hikers need to stay on their toes and do a little common-sense orienteering to get back to where they started. The elevation gain (125 feet) is just the rise from the parking lot to the edge of the open dunes; you could easily quadruple that figure hiking up and down the open dunes. Pick a fair-weather day for this one—preferably a morning before the wind comes up."
