South Santiam River: Mountain House to Foster Lake Professional Review and Guide
"The upper South Santiam is magnificent. This run can be made only after substantial rainfall or snowmelt. The rapids are pool drop, and all the more difficult rapids can be portaged. The upper South Santiam can be divided into four short sections. Character: forested; canyon. This is the most exciting stretch of whitewater on the river. Most of these rapids are peppered with large rocks and require quick judgment and skillful maneuvering or a good roll and a strong boat. As in most high Cascade rivers, logs can be a problem. The Monster, 2 miles after the US 20 bridge, is class 5+ and should be portaged either up the left bank to the road or over the rocks on the right. This conversation piece makes a nice lunch spot. Crawdad Rapid, a small twisty drop only 20 yards below The Monster, looks easy but munches a lot of boaters."
