Middle Santiam River: Green Peter Dam to Foster Lake Professional Review and Guide
"Although short, this run offers some of the best whitewater available in the mid-Willamette area during the summer. Green Peter Dam has two generating turbines, each of which requires 2000 cfs. The flow from the dam is determined by electricity demand. Boaters generally catch the eddy on the right at the top of the rapid and then ferry across the current to the middle of the river to avoid a large hole. Several large holes and waves confront boaters before the rapid ends abruptly in the slack water of Foster Lake. The center chute has been run, but it contains a very dangerous rock sieve. Several good boaters have had close calls, and rescue in the event of problems is very difficult. Once boaters reach the lake, it is a short paddle to the take-out. Character: canyon."
