Summer Lake Wildlife Area Professional Review and Guide
"The refuge offers minimalist camping on broad meadow and gravel flats; comfort is what you bring. Views are of the richly textured refuge lands: open water, channels, marsh, mudflat, and arid brush. To the west rises imposing Winter Ridge. Birding and hunting are the chief draws, with the refuge road to drive and the dikes to hike. A cacophony of sounds delights, as do the evening stars. Mosquitoes can be menacing, but remember they are part of the food chain sustaining the birds. Insect repellent, hats, binoculars, scopes, and telephoto lenses are among the preferred gear."
