The McKenzie River cuts through the Cascade Range form its origin at Clear Lake between Mounts Washington and Jefferson, dropping to the city of Springfield. The headwaters, which spring from underground sources at Clear Lake, are supplemented by springs along the river. Hot springs are frequent along the river corridor, with popular soaking spots at Belknap on the main McKenzie and Cougar Hot Springs on the South Fork. Cougar Hot Springs is an undeveloped site where clothing is optional. It has been closed to nighttime use due to past violence in the area. Other sites provide soaks at the river's edge.
