Lava Camp Lake Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"You will find this rustic camp just off McKenzie Pass Scenic Highway (OR 242) next to tiny, mud-bottomed Lava Camp Lake. The sites rest on a terrace above the lake and along the shoreline in a mixed forest of lodgepole pines, mountain hemlocks, and firs. Half a mile west on OR 242, Dee Wright Observatory serves up fine views of the Three Sisters and Mount Washington Wilderness Areas, the Cascade volcanoes, and the mosaic of forest and lava flow. The fortresslike observatory, constructed of volcanic rock, sits atop the flow. The arrangement of its open-air windows pinpoints landmarks. The twisting scenic highway presents additional wilderness views, as well as access to the Pacific Crest and other trails. In fall the red blush of vine maples suggests a drive."
