Thousands of bright red kokanee salmon migrate from Lake Billy Chinook up the Metolius River to spawn. They are easily seen at close range in the crystal-clear river water. From the parking area at Allingham Bridge, follow a small riverside path for about 30 feet to where a small spring-fed stream enters the main river. Kokanee congregate here before swimming up the creek to spawn. For a close look at the spawning fish, walk up the creek. It flows through an open meadow and is only around 150 feet long.
