Black Butte Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This hike to Young’s Valley encompasses high-mountain scenery, panoramas, glacial canyons, forest, meadows, and serpentine ecology. Options for a shorter hike and access to the East Fork Illinois River Trail. The trailhead is on a pretty little open flat with room for 10 cars and excellent views of the rocky south face of Black Butte and the formerly glaciated canyon of the East Fork of the Illinois River.
This trail penetrates the snow-capped crags that pop into view on the skyline as you enter the Illinois Valley from Grants Pass on US 199. The group of summits rises above the head of the East Fork Illinois River, just over the California line. Note: The trailhead and trail are entirely in California, but the route is most easily reached via Oregon’s Illinois Valley"
