This cute little fellow is only 4 miles long and will probably take no longer than 20 to 30 minutes, but it’s a nice diversion when combined with a tour of the John Day Fossil Beds. The sometimes-muddy route, with a grass center strip, winds slowly around hay fields, meets the river, then winds around more hay fields. The canyon is very wide here, with a series of rimrock hills far in the distance on either side. Highlights include a short but interesting drive along the Wild and Scenic John Day River, with outstanding side trips. Expect the drive to be slow, narrow, bumpy and muddy, with a few large whoopsies (large depressions)--mostly level, though.
