A challenging drive down to the Illinois River, then over a low-water bridge and back up to a high pass at the edge of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Trailhead to Pearsoll Peak. Side trip to Illinois River Falls. The road down to McCaleb Ranch from the Illinois River Road is extremely steep and rough. They fix it occasionally but the repairs don’t seem to last long. Across the river, the road up to Chetco Pass is steep, deeply rutted, with four-wheel drive definitely recommended.
