Ona Beach to Seal Rock Trail

Ona Beach to Seal Rock Trail Professional Review and Guide

"In its understated way, Ona Beach State Park is one of the most appealing waysides on the Oregon coast. Beaver Creek curls languidly through the park, encircling a grassy picnic area far enough from the beach to be out of the wind; wooden picnic tables are scattered under tall spruces and pines. Big restrooms make for easy clothes changes before and after a day at the beach.

Seal Rock State Recreation Site is 1.75 miles down the beach to the south. It’s a great destination in its own right. Here are extensive tide pools (particularly south of the big rock) and opportunities to see nesting seabirds in summer, sea lions in winter, and harbor seals year-round. In recent years the large monolith of columnar basalt at the shoreline has come to be known as Seal Rock, though that place name comes from Seal Rocks, a 2.5-mile-long ledge of partially submerged rock about 0.1 mile off-shore.That’s where the pinnipeds tend to lounge; carry binoculars for the best views."
