In a popular hiking and mountain biking area, the Little North Santiam River has only recently been discovered as a boating paradise. The hike to the river will discourage many paddlers, but the efforts are well rewarded by ultra-clear green water set in a steep, smooth basalt canyon. Much of the picturesque river can only be accessed by boat or hiking in the riverbed at low summer flows. Large red cedars stand tall along the upper river, where heavy undergrowth lines moss-covered banks. Many deep pools separate technical pool-drop rapids and waterfalls.
