Fern Falls Professional Review and Guide
"The aptly named Fern Falls is by no definition a major cascade. And by late summer expect very low flow. But the hike, which parallels the Umpqua River, is pleasant, and the falls themselves possess a delicate beauty. Viewed from a footbridge, Fern Falls splits, creating two streams that tumble over moss-covered basalt before joining forces again and completing the journey to the Umpqua.
From the trailhead, hike 0.2 mile to a junction. Follow the path leading left down to the Umpqua River and a viewpoint of Deadline Falls. At only 12 feet, its size is not what makes it so popular—it’s the salmon leaping up the falls on their way to spawn. After taking in Deadline, return to the main trail and continue upriver. In a matter of feet, another path leads down to the river. This is a good spot for a snack on the way back."
