Dirt trail that explores the spectacular Crooked River Canyon and then climbs to the summit of Misery Ridge. Mountain views. Bridge crossings. Cruise through a desert canyon along the meandering Crooked River and towering volcanic spires. Initially it’s hard to concentrate on the trail with its myriad of distractions. World-class climbing, beautiful canyon scenery, and gawking tourists will test your trail navigation skills. Soon enough you’ll escape this scene and head into the tranquil lower canyon. After a couple miles of blissful trail, you’ll arrive at Monkey Face—an awesome pillar with the likeness of a grinning monkey. Shift into your granny gear and head up mega-steep switchbacks to the ridge crest. Soak up grand views from the top of prominent Central Cascade volcanoes as your body recovers. Check your brakes and head down the Misery Ridge Trail to the canyon floor. You’ll finish this spectacular loop by trekking along the canyon floor and then heading back to your starting point. The sun can be brutal on this trail and water is a must. Water and rest rooms are available at the trailhead.
