Smith Rock State Park

Smith Rock State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Though Smith Rock State Park is one of the top rock-climbing destinations in the United States, it’s also one of the best spots in Central Oregon for a trail run. Unique rock formations, meandering rivers, and stunning vistas combine for a perfect day out on the trail.

That beauty comes with a price, however: Many of the viewpoints require a good amount of climbing, and you can expect to be one of many people on the trails, particularly on weekends. But as with most running destinations, you’ll have broken away from the crowds after a mile or two. Several loop options are available and can be combined to fit your needs. The recommended starting point is at the main trailhead, near the visitor center."

"This scenic loop explores the volcanic landscapes of Smith Rock State Park. This world-class climbing area is packed with challenging multipitch routes, miles of hiking trails, and gorgeous scenery. This route takes you into a scenic river canyon carved by the Crooked River and then ascends to the top of Staender Ridge, where you’ll have outstanding views of the Central Cascade peaks and the surrounding Central Oregon farmland and high desert. You will then descend back into the river canyon and have nice views of the Crooked River and the amazing rock spire called Monkey Face." Read more

The Smith Rock State Park River Trail (one of eight defined hiking trails in the park, and the best complete experience for an easy hike) is a very nice, scenic experience for a quick diversion. Its proximity to town (just a 10-15 min drive from Redmond), short distance, and lack of altitude change other than the grueling ending climb back up to the trailhead from the gorge make it one of the better hikes for those just getting into hiking. It's not more than 1.5 hours of hiking time for anyone. I would recommend visiting the trail on an off day, as this park is extremely popular and you will be sharing this trail with many hikers (and parking can be tough). The Crooked River is a beautiful companion during the entire hike and as long as the park isn't too busy, I think anyone will find this to be a brief but rewarding hike. Disclaimer: Don't be surprised if you see a snake or two on the trail!
