The trailhead is about 30 miles east of Prineville. The first 3 miles are moderately strenuous. The ascent from the fenced pasture around Wildhorse Spring to the top of Round Mountain (6,753 feet) is extremely strenuous and requires advanced technical riding ability. The trail starts in open ponderosa-pine stands. The Forest Service has thinned most of the stands, but there are still a number of large pines and firs. Wild horses and elk benefit from the increased grass production in the thinned stands, which are less prone to fire than old-growth forests. Tread: singletrack, except for .4 mile of gravel road near the top of Round Mountain.
